Reevaluate the "No Excuses" Absence Policy on AP Test Days

The Issue

Our school system prides itself on promoting higher education and facilitating success for every student. But its existing "No Excuses" absence policy on days when Advanced Placement (AP) tests are held contradicts these same principles.

AP tests are intensive, college-level examinations that require significant preparation. Students commonly dedicate many hours of study for these exams, not including the time spent in corresponding AP courses. Due to their demanding nature, these tests often lead to stress and fatigue among students, impacting their overall health and well-being. A study published in Frontiers in Psychology (2014) reported that high school students experience high levels of chronic stress, particularly during standardized testing periods.

The "No Excuses" absence policy counters the genuine need of students to recover and recharge after such strenuous examinations. Denying their need for rest, relaxation, and self-care compromises their academic performance and overall health. A Harvard Medical School report states that inadequate rest can lead to fatigue, decreased concentration and memory, and increased likelihood of accidents.

We believe it is essential for our school system to prioritize students' health, well-being, and academic performance above rigid regulations. It is time to reevaluate the "No Excuses" policy on AP Test days, ensuring that students can perform at their best and strive towards a balanced life.

We therefore urge the relevant authorities to take immediate action. Sign this petition and support us in creating a healthier and more balanced education system for our students.
