Reestablish the Works Progress Administration in Toledo, Ohio by 2024

The Issue

As senior graphic design students at Bowling Green State University, located near Toledo Ohio, we have come to appreciate the historical significance of the Works Progress Administration (WPA). This federal project was a beacon of hope during the Great Depression, providing job security and steady income for artists. It led to the creation of murals, sculptures and other public artworks that continue to enrich our cityscape today.

However, it is important to recognize that not all benefited equally from this initiative. Black artists were largely excluded from WPA projects. Today, we seek not only to reinstate this valuable program but also ensure its inclusivity.

The WPA supported a wide range of projects including infrastructure development and park enhancements. It was instrumental in constructing public buildings and improving roads. The Federal Art Project (FAP), part of the WPA initiative, provided employment for thousands of artists across America.

We propose a new WPA for Toledo within the upcoming year (2024) with an emphasis on diversity and inclusion. We believe that such an initiative would provide much-needed opportunities for local Black artists while contributing significantly to our cultural landscape.

By reinstating a more inclusive version of this historic program, we can honor its legacy while addressing past inequities. Let's bring back the WPA with fairness at its core - supporting all artists regardless of their race or background.

Please sign this petition if you believe in equal opportunities for all artists and wish to see a more vibrant artistic community in Toledo through reinstatement of an inclusive WPA by 2024.
