Reestablish the Tradition of Fireworks in Queen's Park on New Year's Eve

Reestablish the Tradition of Fireworks in Queen's Park on New Year's Eve
The issue
In 2023, an important tradition in our community failed to light up: there were no fireworks in Queen's Park to ring in the New Year. Even though these illuminations are not the most eco-friendly event, many of us believe that this once a year spectacle is a worthy exception. It creates an atmosphere of unity and joy, crucial feelings to start off a new year positively.
The loss of fireworks in Queen’s Park on New Year’s Eve affected me personally, and I am confident that I am not alone in this sentiment. This loss represents the fading of a significant tradition for our community. The sight of the sky illuminated by a myriad of colors provided a sense of hope, marking a fresh beginning, rebirth - feelings more important than ever in challenging times.
Though it is true that fireworks can contribute to air pollution, their impact on a single night, especially compared to daily pollution sources such as cars, industrial processes, and deforestation, is relatively minor. Moreover, the development of eco-friendly fireworks, with lesser smoke and metal contaminants, is a field with promise for future use.
Reestablishing this tradition would not only boost community morale but could also have a positive impact on local businesses as it attracts crowds, thereby stimulating the local economy on an annual basis.
Join me in urging local authorities to allow the tradition of lighting fireworks in Queen's Park on New Year's Eve each year. Let’s bring back events that foster community spirit and embody our shared hopes for each coming year.
