UPDATE: In what the previous owner has categorized as "one of the biggest mistakes" of his life, Blake Lechner posted on his Facebook he would like to have the dog he surrendered to Fort Benning Animal Control returned to him. He said he knew it was a mistake within 48 hours and has since pleaded for the return of the dog named Spot. Sadly the contract to surrender allows an owner only 12 hours to change their mind.

The discussions on social media have been weighing in on both sides, however at the present time, it appears Spot will be made available for adoption through Tri County Animal Rescue and not returned to the Lechner family. Whatever the outcome of this extremely emotional situation, there are no winners or losers. The main concern is what is best for Spot.

A one-and-a half-year-old gentle American bulldog's life turned upside down on Sunday afternoon at a rural Georgia shelter. At the Fort Benning Animal Control, a volunteer was brought to tears as she watched a family surrender their dog. In fact, the heartbroken dog had to be carried into the shelter; his tail was tucked, his eyes were wide, and he visibly trembled.

And what was his crime? The family told the shelter personnel they were giving up their dog because they were "expecting a baby." How is it that most dogs when properly socialized and trained make excellent companions and valuable family members and friends with children? "There's really nothing that I can do to make him feel better right now, except to wait until he feels more at ease with his current situation," stated Nadine B*** who watched the dog's zest for life turn into a profound depression.
