Reduction of Light Pollution

Reduction of Light Pollution
The Issue
As a society, we have countless laws to protect our environment from the everyday activity of humans. We have laws in place to stop littering, to keep companies from polluting water resources, to keep our air clean, and, of course, to protect endangered species. With all these environmental laws in place, I beg the question: Why is light pollution allowed?
There is seemingly no cap to the amount of light pollution allowed by companies, people, or government. As billboards and street lights continue to be used with no cover and no schedules, their light contributes to an issue known as artificial sky glow.
The consequences of this effect are more extensive than one might think at first. A synopsis of light pollution consequences are as follows...
1. Artificial light can destroy the natural rhythm of sleep and physiological processes in both humans and animals. This can result in problems such as:
- Sleep Deprivation
- Fatigue, Anxiety, Headaches, Stress, etc...
- Reduction in the production of Melatonin (responsible for sleep-wake cycle) for both humans and animals
- Lower Melatonin levels have also been linked to cancer
2. Animals are not only confused, but also unable to follow their natural instincts of survival.
- Light Pollution can effect migration patterns
- Animals, such as baby sea turtles, that use the moon as a guide, can often become lost and die
- Underwater ecosystems can be affected by the lights of underwater oil rigs and passing ships
3. The destruction of the natural beauty and information of the night sky.
- Light pollution completely inhibits the connection humans once had with the night sky
- Stargazing is nearly impossible in areas of high light pollution
- Comparing the areas of high pollution vs low pollution is a lot different than you may originally think. View this image below to see the true difference:
- Many ancient societies believed in the significance of earth's orbit and rotation and would often use the night sky as a guide. An unobstructed view of the stars and surrounding planets could be an instrumental tool in learning more about our planet and the universe
I believe the sky is just as much a part of the environment as water and land. To me, it isn't fair that the natural rhythm of night and day has been destroyed simply due to the laziness of businesses and construction. A solution as simple as a cover over the top of a street light, or shutting off all business lights when they close, could make a huge impact in regards to the amount of light pollution introduced to our environment. I'm creating this petition to gauge the support of others and to see if this issue is as important to society as it is to me. If you value the environment, your well-being, animals, or simply want a breathtaking view in the night hours, please sign this petition to show your support.
