Reduce United States Congressional/Senatorial Salaries to the National Average Income

Reduce United States Congressional/Senatorial Salaries to the National Average Income
The Issue
Like many Americans, I bear witness to the problematic scenario where our elected officials in the U.S. Government are actively working to dismantle indispensable programs such as Medicare, Medicaid, Social Security, Public Education, and more. Simultaneously, these same officials collect salaries that are disproportionately higher than those of average Americans, an alarming fact that only widens the chasm between the ruling class and ordinary citizens.
In 2019, the median household income of the United States was around $68,703 (source: U.S. Census Bureau), while the base salary for a Congress member is currently $174,000. This stark disparity contributes to the disconnection between legislators and the constituents they represent. This inequity merely adds insult to injury when considering the challenges already faced by the average American in trying times.
Therefore, I advocate for the reduction of U.S. Congressional salaries to align with the national average income. This adjustment signifies not only a step toward financial fairness but also the hope that officials may find themselves more empathetic to the needs of the very people they serve. It's high time our officials fully understand the struggles of living paycheck to paycheck, just like millions of hardworking Americans. The motivation for serving in Congress should be about the people they represent, not financial gain. We need passionate Congress members who aren't motivated to seek office for their own financial gain.
Join the fight for equal treatment and fair representation. Sign this petition to urge the United States Congress to harmonize their salaries with the national average income.
