Reduce UK's School Summer Holidays to 4 Weeks
Reduce UK's School Summer Holidays to 4 Weeks
The Issue
The United Kingdom has one of the longest summer school holidays in the world - typically six weeks long. We are advocating for the reduction of this holiday period to four weeks. The prevailing six weeks holiday does not only impact students' learning progress adversely – due to what is known as the 'summer slide,' but it also strains parents' capacity to juggle work and childcare. There have been reports suggesting that long summer holidays drastically disrupt the routine of the students, causing detrimental effects on their mental health. Additionally, it places a considerable financial burden on families as parents must find appropriate childcare for a lengthy period or be forced to take unpaid leave. We propose changing the summer break to 4 weeks, or alternatively, giving students 28 days a year to take holiday as needed, similar to the standard work annual leave. This could improve the current system by better aligning school and parents' work schedules, reducing the negative impacts on student learning, and potentially alleviating certain mental health stresses. Let's jointly lobby for a beneficial change in the summer break policy for families throughout the UK. Sign the petition to show your support.
