The Issue
As someone living on an average income, I now find myself struggling to afford travelling into London to visit friends and family. The relentless price hikes in train fares have made such journeys increasingly burdensome, with London not only becoming unaffordable to live or rent in, but also quickly turning into an expensive destination merely to visit.
The concept of peak time pricing only exacerbates the issue. This pricing strategy, which charges commuters extra for travelling during high-demand times, disproportionately affects regular people like me, who have no choice but to commute during these hours due to work and family commitments. The train fare system, as it stands, is unsustainable.
It's time for a change. Scotland has already led the way by introducing flat-rate fares, demonstrating that fairer and simpler fare systems for passengers are achievable. Why should commuters in England be treated any differently? Eliminating peak time pricing and adopting a more unified fare model would make travel accessible for everyone, regardless of their income level or travel schedule.
High train fares not only discourage social interactions but also impede the flexibility needed for professional opportunities. By making travel more affordable and equitable, we can foster greater social cohesion and economic growth within our communities. This model ensures everyone can travel freely without financial strain, thus contributing to the local economy and reducing overall life stress.
Additionally, making train travel more affordable can have significant positive implications on the environment. Encouraging more people to use public transport instead of personal vehicles can significantly reduce carbon emissions, thereby contributing to the fight against climate change. A fairer fare system could significantly boost train usage, making it a greener alternative for many travelers.
I urge the Department for Transport and the UK Government to immediately address this disparity and help create an equitable transport system that serves the needs of all its citizens.
