Reduce tolls in California for daily commuters

The Issue

Living and working in California, particularly in the San Francisco Bay Area, presents many financial challenges. One of these burdens is the exorbitant cost of tolls, which can amount to an overwhelming $300 or more each month, not including harsh late fees per crossing. This is an unsustainable expense for many families trying to make ends meet. Imagine having to allocate such a significant portion of your monthly income solely to tolls — money that could otherwise go toward essential needs such as housing, groceries, and childcare.

This is the reality for countless residents who, like myself, must use toll roads daily to commute to work. For families with young children, carpooling with strangers is not a safe or feasible option, leaving no alternative but to pay these rising toll fees. It's a harsh fact that the toll expense is an unavoidable strain on our financial resources.

It's essential for the state of California to reconsider and reform the toll pricing model and be transparent where tolls fees are being allotted. Bridge tolls were initially put in place to pay for the bridges, and their maintenance does not account for the dramatic spike in toll costs. Implementing a more affordable pricing structure for daily commuters, perhaps through discounts, fee caps or monthly caps, would significantly alleviate the financial pressure on working families.

The economic growth of our state relies heavily on the mobility of its workforce. If tolls continue to surge unreasonably, it will inadvertently hinder economic progress by making it harder for individuals to reach their jobs or by pushing them to leave the state for more affordable living conditions.

There is a pressing need to introduce policies that address these issues. Possible solutions could include increasing funding for public transport, developing infrastructure projects that reduce reliance on toll roads, or implementing technology-driven toll systems that cater to frequent users with special pricing. A new agreement is needed between the toll authority and the people of California.

By signing this petition, you're advocating for a fair and equitable cost system that allows us to commute without sacrificing our financial stability and challenges our constitutional right to travel. Let’s urge our state legislators to take action and make California a more affordable place to live and work. Your signature can help bring about essential change.
