The Issue

I’ve always had a deep love for animals, and it pains me to see how our everyday choices, particularly in fashion, impact them. Fast fashion, exemplified by brands like Temu, contributes significantly to pollution in our oceans, harming countless marine species and ecosystems. The cheap production methods and rapid consumption cycles of these brands often result in waste that ends up in our waterways, where it can take hundreds of years to decompose.

Research shows that the fashion industry is responsible for 20% of global wastewater and 10% of global carbon emissions. Moreover, fast fashion is a major contributor to the 92 million tons of waste dumped in landfills each year. When companies prioritize speed and volume of production over sustainability, the environment and its inhabitants suffer the drastic consequences.

In our own community of El Segundo, we have a unique opportunity to lead by example. We can work toward a future where sustainability is more than just a buzzword. By reducing our consumption of fast fashion brands, such as Temu, we are sending a strong message against environmental irresponsibility and advocating for policies that hold these companies accountable.

Let’s focus on solutions that can empower our community to change its habits:
1. **Support Local, Sustainable Brands**: By purchasing from local designers who prioritize environmentally friendly practices, we can reduce the carbon footprint associated with transporting goods across global supply chains.
2. **Educate and Advocate**: Offering workshops or community engagement events that focus on the impact of fast fashion and how consumers can make more sustainable choices.
3. **Legislative Change**: Encourage city officials in El Segundo to adopt policies that incentivize sustainable business practices and discourage harmful environmental activities by large corporations.

Together, we can make a tangible impact, not just locally, but as part of a broader movement that values sustainability and the health of our planet’s ecosystems. Please help drive change in El Segundo by signing this petition. Together, we can protect our oceans, our animals, and our future.
