Reduce the Speed Limit on N Elm Ave for Safe Neighborhoods and Wildlife Protection

The Issue

July 16th 2025 on my way to drop my dog off a beautiful young buck was struck and killed right in front of St.John’s BA. This type of incident can be reduced by speed limits and signs and raising awareness. There is zero reason why this winding road in between residential neighborhoods and woods should be 45 mph with drivers speeding 50-70 all hours of the day. We recently had a car crash right next to my apartment community. This weekend another tragedy happened when a low flying owl was struck by a car and left to die where everyone speeds. I am desperately trying to bring awareness to a situation that could be helped by reduced speeds, deer/wildlife crossing and low flying owls signs. This area is teeming with wildlife and protecting them should be everyone's concern.

As a local resident of the bustling E Elm Ave, the imminent danger posed by consistent high-speed traffic is something I witness daily. Nestled between W Stonewood Drive and E 51st St, our community's lush aura is often contrasted by the harsh sounds of speeding cars, trucks, and motorcycles. The safety of pedestrians taking a leisurely stroll, joggers soaking in the serene environment, and kids playfully riding their bikes is continuously at risk.

It is not uncommon for us, who live within our gated communities, to find barely enough time to stop our cars at the gate, before another vehicle is on our tail, relentlessly honking. It's a struggle performed on a precarious edge, with minimal margin for error, heightened by this stretch of road infamous for its blind spots.

Moreover, our vibrant wildlife - the deer, owls, rabbits, armadillos, possums and the occasional fox, and the ceaseless chirp of our native birds - are another victim. Our pets have unfortunately not been spared either, occasionally becoming casualties to reckless speedsters.

The dense flora coupled with several stops that lead into local neighborhoods, schools, and apartment blocks calls for an immediate reduction in speed limits from the current 40 mph to a safer 30 mph. Additionally, the placement of wildlife crossing signs and caution boards for deer would do wonders in raising community awareness.
