The Issue

On August 31st, our community lost one of our own -Monique Morton, a beloved local horsewoman, who was tragically killed while riding her horse, Iggy, along Highway 371 in Anza.

This tragedy was not an isolated incident — Highway 371 has long been a dangerous stretch of road where pedestrians, equestrians, and drivers share limited space. Despite being the heart of our small town, vehicles regularly travel well above the posted 45 MPH limit, endangering both residents and animals.

We, the undersigned, are calling for an immediate reduction of the speed limit to 25 MPH through the Anza town area to protect the safety of our community. This change would bring our town’s main roadway in line with other rural communities that prioritize pedestrian and equestrian safety.

Why this matters:

 • Slower speeds drastically reduce the risk and severity of accidents

 • Anza is a rural, horse-centered community where riders, walkers, and children often travel along the road shoulders.

 • Lowering the limit to 25 MPH, which is the typical speed limit through town Centers of Anzas size will save lives — human and animal alike.

We believe that no more lives should be lost before change is made. Please join us in urging our county and state transportation officials to act now to make Highway 371 safer for everyone.

Let’s honor Monique’s memory by protecting others and creating a safer Anza for all.
