Reduce the Speed Limit on Florida State Road 200/A1A from 55 to 45 mph

The Issue

To: Mr. Hampton Ray, Florida Department of Transportation

The road surface of a one-mile stretch of Florida SR 200/A1A, from the Thomas Shave bridge to Old Nassauville Road in Nassau County, is crumbling. Unfortunately, the road is not scheduled to be repaired until fall 2025. Despite the current speed limit of 55 mph, many of the 49,000 vehicles that use this road daily are traveling between 60 and 70 mph. This section includes entries/exits to six subdivisions that include hundreds of homes, over a dozen businesses, and the highest bridge in Nassau County. Residents and business patrons must merge into the high-speed traffic without the luxury of traffic lights. Conversely, the new, six-lane, nine-mile section of SR 200/A1A to the west has multiple traffic lights and a speed limit of only 35-50 mph.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports a five percent decrease in crash-related fatalities for every mile-per-hour decrease in the speed limit. Therefore, lowering the speed limit from 55 to 45 mph could decrease traffic fatality risk by fifty percent and make travel safer for everyone.

If you want the speed limit lowered on this section of SR 200/A1A to 45 mph, sign the petition and ADD A COMMENT. Hopefully, the Florida Department of Transportation will consider this request and lower the speed limit to improve the safety of those who travel on this road.
