The Issue

In mid-Dec 2025, our beloved beach car was totaled by a reckless driver who swerved into our parked car to avoid oncoming traffic. Chrisman Ave is a narrow street and a school zone for Cabrillo Middle School. It's also treated as a thoroughfare connecting Main St. with Thompson St. There are currently no school zone signs on Chrisman, warning drivers of school children on bikes and foot traffic. Drivers regularly speed up between the San Nicholas St. stop sign and Main St. traffic light. It's a recipe for disaster and we experienced quite the financial mess as a result last Dec.

The current speed limit is 25 mph, but it's largely ignored, with vehicles often accelerating upward of 35 mph+. Recently, a neighbor's parked vintage truck was also hit. His mirror was  snapped off by a hit and run driver.

Chrisman Avenue is located in a residential neighborhood in Ventura, California, bustling with bike, foot, and kid traffic. It's a community hub where families and pedestrians should feel safe, not threatened by reckless speeding. The current conditions not only jeopardize the safety of residents' property but more importantly, endanger the lives of the residents and school children.

The solution is clear and actionable: reduce the speed limit on Chrisman Avenue to 15 mph and install appropriate school zone signage. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, lowering speed limits and implementing traffic calming measures can significantly reduce accidents and improve community safety. Ensuring these measures are in place is crucial for safeguarding our neighborhood.

By reducing the speed limit and erecting school zone signs, we will create a safer environment for everyone who lives here and regularly uses Chrisman Ave. It's time for the Ventura city officials to take tangible action to protect our children and our streets. Please sign this petition to urge them to prioritize the safety of our community by reducing the speed limit to 15 mph on Chrisman Avenue and implementing necessary school zone measures. Together, we can foster a safer, more secure, and community-friendly environment.
