Reduce the retirement age of blue collar workers in Australia

The issue

The disparity in retirement age regulations greatly affects blue collar workers in Australia. Having been in the workforce for decades, we have become acutely aware of the injustices faced by blue collar workers who deserve a dignified and timely retirement. The physical demands of our jobs wear down our bodies faster than those in less physically taxing careers. Yet, current policies do not reflect this truth.

Data suggests that the mortality rate is higher for blue collar workers compared to their white collar counterparts (Australian Institute of Health and Welfare). This discrepancy means that by the time we reach retirement age, many of us are too physically drained or even unable to enjoy a prolonged period of well-earned rest and relaxation. Furthermore, we pay higher premiums for our insurance within our superannuation, which adds an additional financial burden on top of our exhausting work schedules.

Despite these challenges, the retirement age for blue collar workers remains unjustly high. This must change to reflect the unique needs and occupational hazards associated with our labor-intensive roles. By lowering the retirement age for blue collar workers, we acknowledge the sacrifices made by those who have dedicated their lives to physically demanding jobs. This change would provide an opportunity for a healthier and potentially longer retirement, allowing workers to enjoy their golden years without the specter of ongoing hardship.

To the policymakers, it is imperative that we rethink the current retirement age criteria. We propose a targeted reduction in the retirement age specifically for those in physically demanding professions. This adjustment would not only align with principles of equity and fairness but also significantly improve the quality of life for countless Australian workers.

If you have spent more than 35 years as a blue collar worker you should be able to retire on completion of that service if you wish too.

Join us in urging the government to address this discrepancy and take a step towards equality for all workers. It's time to honor the hard work and commitment of blue collar workers by adjusting retirement policies to better suit their needs. Please sign the petition to support a fair retirement age for blue collar workers in Australia.
