The Issue

Help Protect the Character of Bay Ridge – Say No to Excessive Citi Bike Stations

Bay Ridge is a peaceful, family-oriented neighborhood with:

  • Tree-lined streets and single-family homes
  • Limited street space and scarce parking
  • A unique charm that makes it feel like a suburb within the city

The City’s Plan to Install 50 Citi Bike Stations Puts That at Risk:

  • Too many stations for a residential  neighborhood
  • Stations placed directly in front of single-family homes, schools, churches, and doctors’ offices
  • Increased congestion and loss of parking
  • Disruption to the character and safety of our streets

We support environmentally friendly transportation — but Bay Ridge does not need 50 Citi Bike stations. A limited number of stations along Shore Road and potentially between 4th Avenue subway stations and bus stops could serve transit needs without overwhelming our residential blocks — but even that must be thoughtfully reviewed.

Our Ask:

  • Develop a more balanced, community-driven plan with far fewer stations in appropriate locations
  • Or, remove Citi Bike from Bay Ridge entirely if a fair and respectful solution cannot be reached
  • Eliminate stations that disrupt parking or compromise the privacy of single-family homes

Take Action:

Join us in urging city officials to protect the character of our neighborhood.

Sign the petition to demand a solution that reflects Bay Ridge’s needs — not a one-size-fits-all city plan.

Thank you for contacting me to share your opposition to the planned Citi Bike program expansion in Bay Ridge. I understand your concern that the Department of Transportation (DOT) proposal, which includes both on- and off-street docking sites, reduces parking availability. My office is working proactively with DOT to offer some alternative site recommendations and convey community feedback about this issue. I anticipate that this input will assist the agency as it works to fine-tune the final map. I believe the extension of the Citi Bike program into Bay Ridge will offer residents increased access to subway and ferry services, and shopping and dining options, while reducing emissions and congestion on the road. Nonetheless, I recognize that the phase-in must be undertaken thoughtfully and with the concerns of the neighborhood in mind. I will continue to work with DOT to achieve a balanced outcome which best serves Bay Ridge. You can also send your feedback directly to bikeshare@dot.nyc.gov. As always, I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts with me; I will be working with your advocacy in mind. Sincerely, Andrew Andrew S. Gounardes NYS Senator, District 26

Dear Petition Supporters, Hello from the Decision Maker Outreach team at Change.org. Our mission is to foster greater engagement between petition supporters and public officials to help create more impact and drive meaningful change. We’re sharing a response the Office of Councilmember Brannan provided to multiple petition supporters who reached out about this issue. We thought it offered useful context around the issue and decision-making process. We hope it’s helpful to others following this petition. Response from the Office of Councilmember Brannan: Thanks for reaching out about this. As it stands, about 20 of the 50 proposed Citibike locations would actually take away any parking (most are on wide sidewalks and street areas that are already no-parking). Our office is working on getting that twenty down to zero and we feel that we already have alternative locations for the proposed spots that would take away parking. I will add that any Citibike docks, even ones on wide sidewalks, that are not used, will be on our list to have removed. I should also add that the decision to bring Citibike to Bay Ridge was done by DOT, which means City Hall and the Mayor's office. In the end, we want this to work for the neighborhood, which is why we will continue to fight any spot that the community thinks is wrong. If you have any specific locations that you think are particularly bad, please let us know. Thanks, Office of Councilman Justin Brannan
