Reduce the Legal Tattoo Age Limit to 16

The Issue

A 16-year-old can hold a job; a 16-year-old can consent to sexual activities; yet, the same 16-year-old is disqualified from obtaining a tattoo, regardless of their personal readiness or significance of the decision. Our society entrusts important responsibilities and acknowledges the individual choices of 16-year-olds in aspects of life that are generally regarded as far more consequential than body art.

In the UK alone, a 2018 survey revealed that 32% of people aged 16-24 years have tattoos (Statistic Brain Research Institute, 2018). Despite the law, teenagers are finding their own means to express themselves through ink, often in potentially unsafe environments due to the restrictions imposed upon them.

The essence of this petition is not to encourage tattooing among 16-year-olds, but rather to affirm the principles of personal liberty and responsible self-expression we uphold for teenagers in other realms. With proper parental guidance and safeguards, such as mandatory safety and sanitation education, we can create a safer environment for young people who opt to get tattooed.

The goal is to harmonize the age for tattooing with the age of working and sexual consent, acknowledging the increasing maturity of our youth. We need to redefine the tattooing age limit law, lowering it to 16 from 18. Stand up for a balanced outlook toward youth decision-making rights - sign the petition today.
