The Issue
Our state is being destroyed by Kentucky Power. Every month, electricity bills climb by hundreds of dollars in a matter of weeks. This isn't just an inconvenience; it's a catastrophe for countless families in Eastern Kentucky—including mine. People are having to make unbearable sacrifices—starving themselves or foregoing essential medications—just to keep the lights on.
The skyrocketing costs of electricity are causing unparalleled hardship and endangering lives in our community. According to data from the American Public Power Association, households in Kentucky already spend about 6% of their income on energy bills. In low-income communities, this number can rise even higher. A sudden and dramatic increase by hundreds of dollars a month isn't sustainable.
Kentucky Power has proposed rate hikes, citing needs for infrastructure improvements and operational costs. But why should average citizens carry the brunt of these expenses, especially when other avenues exist for resolving these issues?
A more equitable solution can be devised. The Kentucky Public Service Commission (PSC) has a responsibility to review proposed rate hikes to ensure fairness. We need the PSC to reject any excessive or unwarranted increases. Other states have implemented caps on rate increases, especially for essential services, funded through small levies on high-income individuals or larger corporations. Kentucky can follow this model to distribute the financial responsibilities more fairly.
Moreover, we call for more investment in renewable energy sources in our region. Our investment in renewables not only offers a long-term reduction in electricity costs but also enhances our local economy and creates jobs.
We cannot let these destructive rate increases continue unchecked. I urge you to stand with me and demand that our lawmakers and regulators take immediate action to halt these exorbitant rate hikes. Please sign this petition to protect families in Eastern Kentucky and create a sustainable future for our state.
