Reduce the 40mph speed limit on the A259 through Nutbourne and Chidham
The Issue
Living along the A259, I have personally witnessed six accidents over this past year on this short 1.4-mile stretch of road. In fact, within the last ten years, there have been a staggering 18 serious accidents, and that number is worryingly on the rise. The urgency to address this situation is paramount, not just for the safety of current residents but also as we prepare for upcoming developments along this road. With construction traffic set to increase, the road noise is bound to escalate, making the living and commuting conditions more perilous and undesirable for everyone.
The A259 is a vital artery running through Southbourne, Nutbourne, and Chidham, extending up to Cut Mill View. This increasing accident prevalence is deeply concerning, particularly during times when our children are traveling to and from school. Their safety should be our utmost priority, and reducing the speed limit would serve as a significant preventive measure against future mishaps.
A Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) request has already been submitted to West Sussex Council. This initiative has received backing from our local MP, County Councilor, and the Parish Councils of Southbourne, Chidham, and Hambrook. While these endorsements provide a strong foundation, the success of this application hinges on significant support from local residents.
Lowering the speed limit to 30mph will not only enhance safety for pedestrians and commuters but also reduce noise pollution, ensuring a more peaceful environment for residents and safeguarding our community members, especially the younger ones.
By lending your support to this petition, you are contributing to a crucial change for the safety and well-being of everyone who lives in or commutes through our community. Together, we can make the A259 a safer and more serene place for all. Please sign this petition to extend the 30mph speed limit along this critical section of road.
