Reduce Subway Curve Noise Around Queensboro Plaza & Court Square in LIC
The Issue
Residents around Queensboro Plaza, Court Square, and nearby Long Island City blocks are regularly exposed to excessively loud subway curve noise, including high-pitched wheel/rail squeal and rumbling that affects sleep, work, and daily quality of life for people living and working in the area.
We are asking MTA New York City Transit to conduct a site-specific noise assessment and short mitigation pilot for the Queensboro Plaza and Court Square area.
Specifically, we request that MTA:
- Measure current noise levels at street level and nearby residential locations during representative daytime and nighttime service.
- Inspect the curve for wheel/rail noise contributors, including rail condition, corrugation, lubrication/friction management, wheel condition, and track geometry.
- Test targeted mitigation options, including rail grinding, lubrication or friction modifier adjustments, and a temporary speed reduction or slow order where operationally feasible.
- Publish before/after findings and explain which mitigation MTA will adopt permanently.
This request does not seek to reduce subway service. It asks MTA to address a concentrated quality-of-life problem using measured, engineering-based mitigation.
