The Issue

As a resident of the Town of Devon, and a parent of three young children, the current residential speed limit of 50 km/hr deeply concerns me. Two of my children have significant disabilities which affect their situational awareness, making it difficult for them to understand the dangers of running across a road. Unfortunately, the high speed limit poses a perpetual threat to their safety.

In a family-friendly community like Devon, it is essential that our streets are safe for everyone, especially our most vulnerable members—our children. Studies show that reducing speed limits can significantly decrease the risk of accidents and injuries. According to the World Health Organization, pedestrians have a much higher chance of survival when struck by a vehicle moving at 40 km/hr than at 50 km/hr. Moreover, reducing the speed limit can lead to a more relaxed and community-friendly environment.

Adopting a 40 km/hr speed limit on all residential roads will not only improve safety but also encourage drivers to be more cautious and observant. Traffic calming measures, such as speed bumps and clear signage, can further aid this goal. Other municipalities have seen success with these approaches, resulting in quieter, safer streets without significantly affecting travel times.

I urge the Town of Devon to prioritize the safety of its residents by implementing these changes. These adjustments will protect not only my family, but all families in Devon, ensuring our children can safely play outside and enjoy their childhoods without constant fear.

Join me in calling on the municipal leaders to make our roads safer by lowering speed limits and implementing traffic calming measures. Your support can make a real difference. Please sign this petition to bring about the change we need.
