The Issue

Driving along the roads of Glen Rose, particularly on highways 67 and 144 and the downtown area, is a daily challenge for us, the residents, and visiting tourists. I've witnessed firsthand the danger these roads present, especially for the children I see walking through downtown Glen Rose every day. The lack of adequate speed limits, clear signage, and pedestrian crossings puts our community and its visitors at significant risk. For too long, this has been an overlooked problem, but now is the time for change.

Glen Rose is a vibrant community, cherished by its long-term residents and a favorite spot for tourists. With attractions like the Dinosaur Valley State Park and Fossil Rim Wildlife Center, we see countless visitors each year who expect a safe experience. Yet, the current state of our roads fails to ensure their safety.

Statistics repeatedly show that high speed limits contribute to road traffic accidents, making it essential to address these issues immediately. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, speed was a factor in 26% of all traffic fatalities in 2019. Implementing lower speed limits can reduce the risk of accidents by providing drivers more time to react and stop if necessary.

Moreover, pedestrian safety is severely neglected. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety reports that adding crosswalks and proper signage can drastically reduce pedestrian accidents. Clear and visible signage ensures both drivers and pedestrians are aware of the surroundings, encouraging vigilance and care.

Traffic enforcement is another vital component in maintaining road safety. Communities that have increased traffic law enforcement have seen significant reductions in speeding and related accidents. Evidence from the RAND Corporation shows that consistent law enforcement can reduce traffic violations by as much as 29%.

Therefore, we urge Glen Rose city officials to take immediate action by reducing speed limits, installing necessary crosswalks, enhancing signage, and increasing traffic enforcement in high-risk areas like highways 67, 144, and downtown Glen Rose. These measures can transform our roads into safer pathways for residents and tourists alike.

Please join me in signing this petition to demand a safer Glen Rose for everyone. Together, we can make a difference and protect our community.
