Reduce Roadkills

The issue

Many animals are killed on the roads of Australia every day. We want to create awareness among everyone to reduce the amount of roadkill.

Statistics show that more than 10 million animals (around 4 million mammals and 6 million birds, reptiles and other species) are killed on the roads of Australia by cars every year. (That's nearly 30,000 every day!) Some animals are injured and die away from the road. Some survive with terrible injuries and have to be euthanised.

Traffic volume and speed are key factors for many species, including kangaroos.

Driver training and experience are also important. In the Royal National Park in New South Wales, half the drivers surveyed had struck animals, including wallabies and deer. Yet, most still weren’t keen to slow down or avoid driving at dawn and dusk.

There are many ways that we can avoid roadkill in Australia:

  • Slow down: Reduce your speed, particularly at dawn, dusk, and at night, when many animals are most active.
  • Be vigilant: Watch the sides of the road and into paddocks and be aware that animals can appear suddenly.
  • Use high beams: Turn on your high beams when you're on country roads to see animals better, but dip them if you see other vehicles.
  • Don't swerve: If you see an animal on the road, brake slowly and safely. Swerving can lead to a more serious accident.
  • Be aware of herds: Remember that if you see one kangaroo, there are likely others nearby.
  • Avoid distractions: Keep your phone use to a minimum and stay focused on the road.
  • Plan your trip: Try to drive during daylight hours and factor in extra travel time to account for slower speeds.

We must stop adding to the statistics of roadkill on Australian roads every day. Remember, Every Life Matters: Slow Down for Our Wildlife.
