The Issue
Every year, I watch as my rent increases again and again, forcing me and countless others to make impossible decisions. The city I call home, Boston, is becoming increasingly unaffordable not just for me, but for thousands of other residents who are struggling to keep up with the rising costs. We are at a breaking point where, without change, many will be pushed further away from the city or worse, into homelessness.
The cost of living in Boston continues to spike, with rent prices outpacing the average wage increase. In 2022, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in Boston rose above $2,500 per month, a daunting figure when considering that the median household income has not kept pace with these figures. While wages have increased slightly, they are nowhere near enough to cushion the blow of such drastic rent hikes.
For example, the average salary increase barely covers inflation rates, let alone the disproportionate rise in housing costs. This disparity creates a gap where families struggle to afford basic necessities like food and healthcare after paying rent. In a city with rich culture, opportunities, and a vibrant community, the cost of living should not determine if one can partake in these offerings or not.
We need actionable, sustainable solutions to combat the climbing rent prices in this city. A potential answer lies in adopting policies that control excessive rent hikes and encourage affordable housing developments. We urge local government officials to consider rent control measures and incentives for landlords to maintain reasonable pricing standards.
Furthermore, solutions can include increasing the stock of affordable housing, providing subsidies or vouchers for low-income households, and implementing policies encouraging developers to include affordable units in new projects. These steps, among others, can help address the immediate and long-term housing needs of Boston residents.
Together, we have the power to initiate meaningful change. This issue impacts everyone in our community, from our longest residents to the newest. Sign this petition to ask Boston city leadership to take decisive action to curtail unfair rent increases and restore balance to our beloved city. With your support, we can make living in Boston affordable again for everyone.
