The Issue
Having lived in Hamilton County, Ohio for the past 35 years, my family and I have been dedicated and contributing members of this community. We have consistently fulfilled our obligations, paying property taxes diligently. But as we now rely solely on Social Security, the burden of ever-increasing property taxes has become unsustainable. Over these years, we've watched our property taxes rise to a point where they now overshadow the cost of our home when we first purchased it back in 1990. This staggering comparison highlights the pressing and urgent need for reform.
Thousands of other residents are undoubtedly facing similar challenges, particularly those on fixed incomes like ours. Hamilton County, known for its thriving neighborhoods and dynamic community life, should be a place where people can continue to live comfortably into their retirement years without the fear of losing their homes due to exorbitant taxes.
The property tax system in Hamilton County seems to disproportionately impact long-time residents and the elderly. Data shows an alarming trend of increased tax rates, forcing some to make difficult choices between essential needs and paying taxes. According to a recent study, property taxes have increased by an average of 15% over the past decade in our area, a rate that far outpaces the national average. Such increases outstrip any realistic growth in income for families, especially those contending with fixed incomes.
We need a fair and sustainable approach to property taxes in Hamilton County. One potential solution is to reassess the formula used to calculate property taxes and introduce caps for retirees as well as long-term residents. Adjusting for inflation and implementing a more gradual tax increase could ease the burden on those who have given decades of contribution and support to the county.
We call upon the Hamilton County Commissioners, local government officials, and state legislators to hear our plea and take action. By signing this petition, you're voicing your support for the fair treatment of property owners and helping to ensure that our community remains inclusive and supportive of all its residents, irrespective of age or income level. Please join us in advocating for a reduction in property taxes—make our message impossible to ignore. Sign this petition today to bring about the necessary change for our community.
