Student nurses are obligated to complete an excessive number of practice hours, often without compensation, which severely strains their mental health and financial stability. According to the Royal College of Nursing, numerous student nurses face debt and burnout due to these rigorous demands. The NMC mandates 2,300 practice hours for student nurses.

This situation has profoundly impacted my life and family. I couldn’t properly mourn my mother’s death because I was preoccupied with meeting my required hours or face restarting a course year. I am burdened with significant debt because I cannot work additional hours while looking after a child.
Despite all of this, I and other student nurses are required to contribute 40 unpaid hours each week to the NHS.

It is time for change. Reducing the practice hours required for student nurses will not only improve their well-being but also ensure they can provide better care for patients in the long run.
