Reduce Plastic Pollution By Increasing the Value of Plastic Shopping Bags

The Issue

Singing this petition has the potential to initiate action on one of the most pressing issues of the last four decades, climate change.

Each year, 12.7 million tons of plastic waste is added to the environment. It has been predicted that there will be more plastic than fish in the water by 2050, eventually killing all marine life and resulting in a “dead ocean”. Despite the efforts to remain environmentally friendly, our dependence on plastic has undoubtedly increased.

And what tailors to that, is the exceptionally small price of plastic bags at grocery stores. Busy with our routine daily lives, we wouldn’t think twice about spending 10 cents for a bag each time we shop at Target. This fee is hardly a speed bump to us, however, it has a devastating impact on global warming.

By increasing the bag prices by just 25-50 cents, we will force people to become more alert and think carefully before purchasing a bag. People will begin to consider bringing their own bags, keeping eco-friendly bags in their car, or preferring paper over plastic at times when purchasing a bag is necessary.

This perfect degree of change is enough to force people to think and act upon the issue, but not become an inconvenience to shoppers. If corporate grocery stores implement this, we can collectively take action on this global issue and bring change.
