The Issue

PETITION to the VERMONT AGRICULTURAL INNOVATION BOARD

2025 marks the 55th anniversary of Act 273 passed in 1970. Act 273 described the dangers of "economic poisons" for humans and the environment, and established the VT Pesticide Advisory Council (VPAC), whose mandate was to reduce pesticides in Vermont.

In fact, pesticide use actually increased since 1970, nearly doubling during the 1990s.

55 years is too long to wait for pesticide reduction!

Pesticide use data for 2022 indicated use of 362,735 lbs. active pesticide ingredients. (updated:) In 2024 (last year available) that went up to 406,310 lbs. used.  That includes some PFAS active pesticide ingredients. That does not include added ingredients like surfactants and drift retardants.

The Agricultural Innovation Board (AIB) was established by Act 49, in 2021, four years ago and replaced VPAC.

At least six (6) legislative charges for AIB in Act 49 pertain to pesticide reduction. https://agriculture.vermont.gov/public-health-agricultural-resource-management-division/pesticide-programs/agricultural-innovation

The Farm to Plate Plan 2021-2030 Goal 7 (p.20) states “The pounds of pesticides used per year will decrease by 20%.

2030 is less than five years away.

The time is now for real accountability on protection of Vermont's land, water, people, and wildlife.

We the undersigned urge you to commit at your (Dec. 8, edited to): Mar. 24, 2026 meeting to a serious effort to fulfill your pesticide reduction mandate!
