Reduce penalties for minor speeding offences

The Issue

Speeding penalties for minor offences can feel excessively harsh due to the extended period during which they impact drivers' records. Many people, including myself, have experienced the frustration of being penalised for minor infractions, often occurring just above the speed limit in safe conditions, only to face long-lasting consequences that seem disproportionate to the act itself.

Minor speeding offences often occur inadvertently. Imagine driving on a clear road, paying careful attention, yet your speed slightly exceeds the limit by a small margin. Should such occurrences lead to points on a driving record that remains for years? The punishment does not fit the character of the offence or the circumstances.

In 2022, over a million UK drivers attended speed awareness courses. While these courses aim to educate and promote safe driving, they can be lengthy and burdensome for minor violations. Introducing shorter, more focused courses for minor offences could meet educational goals without imposing unnecessary inconvenience on drivers. Additionally, reducing the penalty period for such infractions would alleviate the undue stress and long-term impact on individuals’ driving records.

Reevaluating how minor speeding offences are managed can lead to a more understanding and proportionate system. Emphasising education over prolonged punishment benefits all road users, enhancing safety while respecting drivers' circumstances.

I urge our road authorities to reconsider penalty protocols for minor speeding offences. Implement shorter, more focused educational courses and decrease the duration that minor offences remain on driving records. Such changes would foster fairness and better align penalties with the nature of the violation.
