The Issue

I live in a multi car home where parking is a daily challenge. Our garage, like many others, is filled with essentials like exercise equipment, Christmas decorations, bikes, and a variety of other items common in garages. Not every resident has the opportunity to park their car inside, and the city punishes us by imposing fees for parking on the street overnight. Recently, this fee was increased overnight from $1 to $5 without any notice or consideration of the impact on residents.

This sudden 400% increase in overnight parking fees is not just unfair, it is a significant financial burden for families like mine who rely on street parking. Many households in our community, particularly those with multiple cars, are feeling the strain of this unexpected cost. It is especially frustrating that this fee hike is being enforced sporadically and only on selected streets. This inconsistency adds to the stress and confusion faced by residents.

We understand the need for the city to manage parking effectively, but a more reasonable fee would allow residents to balance their daily expenses without the added worry of costly parking fees. A fair compromise would be to revert the fee to its original price of $1, or at most $1.50, which considers inflation while still remaining affordable.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Economic Analysis, inflation over the last few years has averaged around 2% annually, which does not justify a 400% increase in parking fees. Instead, let's encourage the use of public spaces in a manner that supports both the city's operational needs and the residents' financial constraints.

By signing this petition, you are standing with us in advocating for a fair and equitable parking fee structure. Let's urge the city to revert the overnight parking fees back to $1 or $1.50, ensuring that all residents are treated fairly and not disproportionately burdened by an unexpected leap in cost.
