Overfishing is a serious problem happening worldwide. If we don’t take action to stop overfishing, we will lose all marine life. We already lose 300,000 whales, dolphins, and porpoises and 100 million sharks each year from commercial fishing alone. Furthermore, each year 0.97 to 2.7 trillion fish are killed, not including the many fish farmed. In West Hawai’i alone, we have lost almost 50% of fish biomass in the past decade. Being that there are less fish in the ocean, our reefs are dying from algae smothering them. Additionally, 60% of our reefs died in the heatwave in 2019. Enforcing and adding stricter fishing policies and regulations can help reduce the amount of fish dying every year, which can help save the ocean’s ecosystem as well. Illegal fishing happens a lot in Hawai’i and goes by unnoticed. We need to take action to make sure that illegal fishing doesn’t happen frequently. A regulation that should be added is that you can only catch and release fish if you don’t have any use for it. Another rule that should be added is that you can only catch a certain amount of fish at once. This way, fish have a better chance of reproducing and can start thriving. Doing so will benefit the coral reefs and the ocean. We need to educate people about overfishing and how it's not only hurting the ocean, but society too.
