Reduce noise pollution in DUMBO from Manhattan Bridge train

Reduce noise pollution in DUMBO from Manhattan Bridge train
The Issue
Living in the vibrant neighborhood of Dumbo, Brooklyn, has always been a cherished experience for my family and me. However, the relentless noise from the Manhattan Train, passing every five minutes during peak hours, has become a daily challenge. The constant clamor, often exceeding OSHA safe noise levels of 90 decibels, poses a real threat to our hearing. As a concerned parent, I worry about the impact on my children's hearing, knowing that prolonged exposure can lead to severe health issues, including hearing loss and even dementia.
Beyond personal health concerns, this noise invades the tranquility of our community spaces. Everyone attempting to walk their dogs, work from home, or simply enjoy the park or local library is subjected to this harsh soundscape. The noise even penetrates indoor venues, interrupting activities in community centers, libraries, and schools.
In light of these issues, I propose that the MTA collaborate with local authorities to implement noise reduction measures.
- Welding the tracks
- Lubrication of the tracks
- Rubber insulation on tracks and wheels
- Insulation and covering below of the tracks (could also reduce hazards from falling from the tracks)
- Use of lighter cars
This issue not only affects our day-to-day lives but also our long-term community health. Noise pollution in urban environments has been shown to increase stress levels, affect sleep, and contribute to cardiovascular problems. Given Dumbo's growing population and its desirability as a cultural and residential hub, addressing this problem must be a priority for the authorities.
Brooklyn's residents deserve a quieter environment that supports mental and physical well-being. By signing this petition, you can help raise awareness and press our local government and the MTA to take urgent action to shield our neighborhood from the harmful effects of excessive train noise. Your signature matters; it will bring us one step closer to a peaceful community. Let's work together for a healthy and safe DUMBO.
