Reduce Noise Pollution from Waymo Charging Stations in Santa Monica
The Issue
My home is next to the new Waymo station located at Euclid & Broadway in Santa Monica. Its close proximity to an elementary school and multiple apartment complexes including mine, has turned our once peaceful neighborhood into a hub for noise pollution. The constant "beep-beep-beep" sound as the autonomous vehicles back out of their spaces (in their own lots) is an incessant disturbance that hinders both our tranquillity during the day and our peace during the night. Not to mention how "they" don't know how to pull in and out of the alleyway effectively.
The elementary school across the street already has parents backing up the street to pick up their kids . . . now add the constant stream of driverless vehicles (by some estimates 200 an hour) running in and out of the two lots in Santa Monica is crazy.
An easy fix would be to alter the cars' code so that when they're in their own charging station (lot), the volume lowers considerably. Then once they leave the lot, the volume of their back-up sound can go back to however they want it in public.
One of our neighbors was issued a restraining order from Waymo for blocking the Waymos from entering the lot — I don't blame him — these things are just going around the block endlessly. Also, I put up a hard-copy petition and it has mysteriously gone missing. I've emailed the city (no reply), I've commented on Waymo's TikTok ads and my comments have been deleted and I've emailed Waymo directly (no reply), plus I've spoken to the on-site workers and they say they can't do anything. That's not good business.
It's imperative that Waymo (a Google company) respects the right to peace and tranquillity of the residents of Santa Monica by lowering the sound of their autonomous vehicles and operating during appropriate hours only. Let us rejoin forces to regain our right to peace and quiet. We urge the management of Waymo and the city to address our concerns and undertake urgent measures. Please sign this petition and join us in resolving this issue.
