Reduce NHS waiting times for ADHD & Autism assessments in Scotland

The Issue

Our son came into our lives through adoption facilitated by a Scottish council. Despite assurances, we soon discovered aspects of his health that were never disclosed to us. Within just one week of welcoming him into our home, it became clear that he was struggling.

The impact on our son's life, particularly his educational and social experiences, has been profound. We sought assistance from healthcare professionals, hoping to undertake neurological assessments that could guide us towards better management strategies. Despite pursuing referrals from both his school and our local doctor, our journey has been mired in delays.

The waiting period for an appointment with the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAHMS) stretches over four years, while an NHS neurology assessment could take anywhere between four to six years. This is not just our story. Thousands of families both in Scotland and across the rest of the UK are facing similar hardships.

The current NHS waiting times for ADHD and autism assessments are not just numbers; they represent years of lost opportunities for children to receive timely interventions that could dramatically improve their life quality. The negative impact extends beyond children; families are left feeling helpless and unsupported as they navigate complex healthcare systems with little to no guidance.

Statistics indicate that children who receive early diagnosis and intervention have better educational outcomes, more substantial social relationships, and improved long-term health. Immediate improvements to these waiting times are critical.

Council funding cuts are also impacting a basic level of schooling with teachers failing our kids without the correct provisions, funding and support needed for children with neurological problems.

We call upon the Scottish Government & NHS to prioritize reducing waiting times for ADHD and autism assessments. This can be achieved through increased funding, employing more specialists, and creating efficient pathways for diagnosis and intervention. Improving these systems is essential not only for children currently in need but also for the sustainability of public health.

Please lend your voice to this petition. With enough support, we can urge the authorities to initiate meaningful changes to the NHS, ensuring that children in need receive the healthcare they deserve. Sign this petition and help us advocate for shorter waiting times and better support for our children. Together, we can pave the way for a brighter future for countless families.
