The Issue

I am a resident of Mississauga with a family of seven, including four children who are currently attending universities with aspirations to become contributing citizens of Canada. Like many families, we are already struggling to make ends meet due to rising costs in groceries, gas, electricity, and heating. The recent increase in property taxes, particularly the regional and city levies for the year 2025, has become an overwhelming burden for us and many others in similar situations. Our property tax on an average residential home in Mississauga has increased by $850.35 per year. This hike is not only unaffordable but also seems unjust, as the value of our home is now double the price we initially paid, even though we have no plans of selling it.

Families in Mississauga are facing harsh financial strains as the combined impact of rising property values and additional levies continues to escalate. The tax burden created by these levies is putting immense pressure on local residents, making it nearly impossible to manage day-to-day expenses without sacrificing basic needs.

We urgently need action from both provincial and federal governments. They must step in to provide financial support to the Peel region and City of Mississauga, ensuring these municipalities do not pass the entire financial burden onto the residents. This is not just a plea for relief but a call for more sustainable and fair property taxation that considers the average resident's capacity to pay.

Together, we can advocate for a fairer tax system that balances the needs of public funding with the financial realities faced by everyday citizens. By doing so, we protect our community's most vulnerable, uphold the potential for future growth, and ensure that families like mine can continue to thrive in Mississauga.

Please support us in urging the governments to reduce the oppressive 2025 property tax levies in Mississauga by signing this petition today.
