Reduce Livestock Farming in the U.S.

The Issue

! HAND WRITTEN NOT USING AI !

The amount of meat consumed by people in the world, especially the United States of America is unsustainable. Excessively farming livestock is causing detrimental damage to the ocean, atmosphere, ecosystems, and taking up extreme amounts of land. Animal agriculture is the leading cause of animal extinction, ocean dead zones, water pollution, and habitat destruction.

Here are some stats to look at:

  • Livestock and their byproducts account for at least 32,000 million tons of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year, or 51% of all worldwide greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Methane is 25-100 times more destructive than CO2 on a 20 year time frame
  • Methane has a global warming potential 86 times that of CO2 on a 20 year time frame.
  • Livestock is responsible for 65% of all human-related emissions of nitrous oxide – a greenhouse gas with 296 times the global warming potential of carbon dioxide, and which stays in the atmosphere for 150 years.
  • Cows produce 150 billion gallons of methane per day.
  • Converting to wind and solar power will take 20+ years and roughly 43 trillion dollars.
  • Agriculture is responsible for 80-90% of US water consumption
  • Growing feed crops for livestock consumes 56% of water in the US.
  • 2,500 gallons of water are needed to produce 1 pound of beef.
  • Livestock covers 45% of the earth’s total land.
  • A farm with 2,500 dairy cows produces the same amount of waste as a city of 411,000 people
  • Animal agriculture is responsible for up to 91% of Amazon destruction.
  • 1-2 acres of rain forest are cleared every second (That is equal to the size of a football field).
  • Reducing methane emissions would create tangible benefits almost immediately.

This is just a fraction of how livestock farming is affecting the Earth. If you want to see more stats, do your own research. Watch documentaries. I recommend you visit this URL:

(This is where I got these stats, but there are more on the website.)

The best thing you can do is not support livestock farming. If you are able, start cutting back on your meat consumption. Consider vegetarianism, veganism, or pescatarianism. If you don't want to go to that extreme, start eating meatless meals every now and then.
