Reduce lawn maintenance noise pollution (Charlotte, NC)

The Issue

For individuals with sensory sensitivities, the relentless noise from lawn maintenance can be a source of daily torment, impacting not just peace and comfort, but also our ability to live in certain areas. I am one of those individuals. The serenity of residing in a single-family home, cherished by many, is inaccessible to me due to the barrage of noise from lawn equipment like mowers, blowers, and trimmers that occur almost on a daily basis including weekends. This cacophony isn’t just an inconvenience; it's a barrier to a standard living experience and homeowner's right to  "quiet enjoyment" in their property.

Noise pollution from lawn maintenance is a well-documented issue, with equipment averaging between 80 to 100 decibels, a level similar to that of a construction site or heavy traffic. The World Health Organization recognizes noise above 85 decibels as potentially harmful to human hearing. For people with Autism, Misophonia, and/or sensory processing challenges, the effect is even more pronounced, leading to heightened anxiety, sensory overload, physical discomfort, and worsening health conditions..

This issue affects not only those with sensory sensitivities but also the broader community. Excessive noise can disrupt sleep, disrupt work, hinder relationships, hinder communication, reduce daily functioning, and reduce overall quality of life for everyone in the direct and surrounding areas. Thankfully, alternatives exist that can mitigate this disruption:

1. Encourage the use of quieter, electric lawn equipment. These machines are not only less noisy but also environmentally friendly.
2. Implementing designated quiet hours and days during which noisy lawn equipment is restricted.

3. Increase awareness and training for landscapers and homeowners about the impact of noise pollution and how to minimize it.

4. In HOA regulated communities, voting and agreeing on a day and times in which lawn maintenance is allowable.

By adopting these measures, we can create more inclusive and peaceful neighborhoods where everyone, regardless of their sensory needs, can thrive. Help us advocate for change by signing this petition to call for stricter noise regulations and the promotion of quieter lawn maintenance alternatives in residential areas.
