The Issue

In India, the current tenure for the Lok Sabha and various state legislative assemblies is set at five years. While this provides stability, it also means prolonged periods without direct accountability to the public. To enhance accountability and make our democratic system more responsive to the citizens' needs, it's time to consider reducing the election period from five to four years.

A shorter election cycle offers numerous benefits. Firstly, it ensures that elected representatives remain more attuned and responsive to the immediate concerns of the public. With elections every four years, politicians would be incentivized to focus on fulfilling their electoral promises and addressing pressing challenges in a timely manner. This immediate accountability can catalyse significant improvements in governance, as leaders who do not perform risk losing their mandate sooner.

Moreover, a four-year cycle aligns with several major democracies, including the United States, where the president and members of Congress are elected every four years. Adopting a similar cycle in India ensures that our political landscape remains dynamic and relevant on both national and international stages.

Detractors might argue that frequent elections could lead to instability; however, it is imperative to recognize that electoral processes are fundamental to democracy. Instead of instability, more frequent elections can act as catalysts for continuous governmental improvements.

Reducing the election term would also require lesser expenses on unnecessary official events and media engagements primarily aimed at publicity during the additional year. This cost efficiency benefits the taxpayer and allows the government to redirect funds to more pressing societal issues such as healthcare, education, and public amenities.

Join us in calling on the Indian government and the Election Commission of India to consider amending the Constitution to reduce the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies' election terms from five to four years. Let us strive for a more accountable, dynamic, and efficient governance system.
