Reduce Haverford Rd speed limit for student safety

Reduce Haverford Rd speed limit for student safety
The Issue
UPDATE: We have spoken to Commissioner Saunders! The petition has grabbed his attention and he will be working to determine what can be done, but he said "We WILL do something"!
As a concerned parent and teacher in Milmont Park, Folsom, PA, I've witnessed firsthand the daily dangers posed by the current speed limit of 25 mph on Haverford Road. With three children of my own and as an educator dedicated to the well-being of children, I feel a pressing need to advocate for safer streets.
Haverford Road serves not only as a residential street but as a well-trodden path for children walking to and from Ridley Middle and High Schools. The road is lined with parked cars, making visibility challenging for drivers and exposing young pedestrians and cyclists to unnecessary risks, especially during peak school hours. I have seen many instances where children playing outside have been put in danger by the current speed conditions, a reality that is too close to home as they chase after balls or ride their bikes. Furthermore, this street is often used as a shortcut by drivers looking to bypass busier roads, which leads to frequent speeding and endangers our kids even more.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reports that reducing vehicle speed directly reduces the frequency and severity of accidents, particularly in residential areas. By lowering the speed limit from 25 mph to 15 mph, we can significantly increase the safety of children and community members, offering them the protection they deserve. Many localities have successfully implemented similar changes, resulting in safer streets without significantly affecting traffic flow.
Implementing a lower speed limit is a simple yet effective measure to ensure the safety of our community’s youngest members. It also aligns with the broader vision of creating a pedestrian-friendly environment conducive to outdoor activities and healthy lifestyles for families.
I urge local authorities, fellow parents, and residents of Milmont Park to support this petition. Let's prioritize the safety of our children over convenience and work together to make Haverford Road a safer place for everyone. Please sign this petition to help bring about this much-needed change.
