The Issue

Every year, approximately 9000 kilograms of food is wasted at REVA University. This staggering amount of food waste is not just a number; it represents countless missed opportunities to make a positive impact in our community. For me, this is not just about reducing waste—it's personal. I believe that this food could be redirected towards underserved communities, making a significant difference in their lives.

We, the students of REVA University, recognize that food waste on campus is being caused not only by meal demand mismatch, but also by issues related to menu repetition, portion sizes, and the handling of leftover food. Edible food is often left unfinished and wasted. In addition, leftover food is not always managed in the most effective way.To address this issue, we request REVA University to consider the following actions:

1. Improve menu variety and reduce repetitive meal patterns.

2. Offer smaller portion sizes with an option for refills.

3. Segregate food waste properly at source to distinguish edible leftovers from inedible waste.

4. Create a system to safely donate surplus edible food where possible.

5. Enable a Reservation of food after deadline for waitlisted people, upon declaration of no-show of booked meals in the food booking application.

We request once again that these improvements be made possible so that food can be served in better portions, menu planning can be improved, edible surplus can be redirected, and unavoidable waste can be handled responsibly. By signing this petition, we support a practical and campus-wide effort to reduce food waste through better menu planning, portion control, segregation, and donation.
