Reduce Flat Rate Water Bills and Extend Payment Grace Period in Hoquiam
The Issue
I am a resident of Hoquiam and a caregiver. I am raising this issue on behalf of my clients who are on a fixed income and face severe financial strain due to hefty water bills. Their water was currently shut off without any grace period, resulting in significant distress and inconvenience. The existing flat rate for water is $416 bi-monthly, a monumental cost, especially for those on fixed incomes.
In cities similar to Hoquiam, lower flat rate water fees are a common practice. For instance, in Aberdeen, neighboring city to Hoquiam, residents have reported a more reasonable monthly charge, making our local rates come across as excessively high.
Not only are the water bills egregiously expensive, but there seems to be no grace period provided to pay the bill post the due date. This absence of any breathing room is unjust and unfair, particularly for those living with limited financial resources.
The solution we call for is two-fold. Firstly, it's imperative to lower the flat rate for water to something comparable to neighboring cities. Secondly, we ask for the introduction of a minimum 3-day grace period to make the bill payment following the due date. We also suggest offering options for making payments throughout the 2 month period, rather than in one massive lump sum. These changes will provide needed relief to vulnerable citizens like my clients and many others living on a fixed income in Hoquiam.
