Reduce Excessive Job Requirements for Filipino Workers

Reduce Excessive Job Requirements for Filipino Workers
The Issue
Many job seekers in the Philippines face excessive and often unreasonable requirements when applying for work, even for entry-level and minimum-wage positions. Applicants are frequently required to submit numerous government-issued IDs, clearances, certifications, and years of prior experience, many of which are not directly related to the job itself. This creates significant barriers for fresh graduates, students, and individuals from low-income backgrounds who may lack the time and financial resources to complete these requirements before being hired.
In contrast, many other countries require only six to eight essential qualifications, focusing primarily on relevant skills, education, and legal eligibility to work. The current system in the Philippines delays employment, contributes to underemployment, and limits opportunities for capable and willing workers.
We call on employers and government agencies to reassess and simplify job requirements, especially for entry-level positions, and to prioritize competence, trainability, and potential over excessive paperwork. Reducing unnecessary requirements will create a fairer, more inclusive, and more efficient labor system for Filipino workers.
