Reduce ethanol and biofuel blends in India

Reduce ethanol and biofuel blends in India
The Issue
Respected Sir/Madam,
I am a salaried middle-class citizen who, like millions of Indians, has invested a significant portion of my earnings into purchasing vehicles through long-term EMIs. For many of us, a vehicle is not a luxury but a necessity for our daily lives, work, and family responsibilities.
In recent years, the mandatory increase in ethanol blending in petrol has raised concerns among vehicle owners regarding engine performance, maintenance costs, and long-term reliability. Many owners have reported increased service requirements, fuel efficiency issues, and concerns about the longevity of vehicle components.
As a vehicle owner who purchased a motorcycle in 2021 and a car in 2023, I am worried about the impact that changing fuel compositions may have on vehicles that were originally purchased with the expectation of many years of reliable service. The proposed increase in biofuel content in diesel has further increased uncertainty for diesel vehicle owners who have made substantial financial commitments based on existing fuel standards.
While I fully support India's efforts toward energy security, reducing fuel imports, and promoting cleaner and renewable energy sources, I believe that the interests of vehicle owners must also be considered during this transition.
I respectfully request the Government to consider the following measures:
Provide consumers with fuel choices wherever feasible instead of making higher biofuel blends the only available option.
Conduct and publish transparent, independent studies on the long-term impact of higher ethanol and biofuel blends on vehicle engines across different age groups and vehicle categories.
Introduce financial assistance, incentives, or support programs for vehicle owners who may need modifications or upgrades to adapt to future fuel standards.
Implement any future increase in blending percentages gradually and in close consultation with automobile manufacturers, fuel companies, transport operators, and consumer groups.
Establish a clear compensation or warranty framework in cases where fuel-related issues are proven to arise due to government-mandated fuel composition changes.
India's transition toward sustainable energy is important, but it should be achieved in a manner that does not place an unexpected financial burden on ordinary citizens who have invested their hard-earned savings into their vehicles.
I humbly request the Ministry and all concerned stakeholders to review the current policy approach and adopt a balanced roadmap that protects both environmental goals and consumer interests.
Together, we can build a cleaner future without compromising the trust and financial security of millions of vehicle owners.
Thank you for your consideration.
Sincerely,
A Concerned Vehicle Owner and Citizen of India
