Reduce Downtown Iowa City Parking Rates Back to Staff Recommendations

The Issue

Hello, we are Catherine's.

For over half a century, we have proudly served the community of downtown Iowa City. We are much more than just a business; we’re an integral part of the vibrant heart of Iowa City.

On July 1st, 2024, the street and ramp parking rates in the area doubled after approval of the City Council. A measure that went against city staff recommendations, and without consultation from local businesses like ours.

The motive is worthy, create a free bus system in the city, which we support 100% , but the impact of the methods to achieve is greater

This decision disproportionally affects the lifeblood of our business – our daytime customers and our dedicated employees. The increased costs are only imposed from 8am to 6pm, essentially taxing daytime traffic, while leaving the evening rates untouched.

We are looking for more ways to spread this charge, expanding meter hours, increasing ticket prices, anything that will encourage people to come during the day to shop and eat, not discourage.

We have personally approached the City Council, with little to no response back as have other community and business members.

We believe this isn’t just an issue for Catherine’s or even just the downtown area. It is about preserving the character of Iowa City and the business community that has thrived here for decades, despite fragile economies and online competition. Losing these businesses would make Iowa City struggle, like many other downtown communities

Our goal is to call on the City Council to revert the rates back to staff recommendations

Before any such future increases, a feedback survey should be done to assess the impact. Not involving the people is a disservice to our town; damaging to our local economy; but most of all, detrimental to the community we’ve served and loved for over 50 years.
