Reduce Discrimination Against Felons Post-Incarceration and Promote Fairness in Presidential Eligibility

The Issue

With deeply personal conviction, we draw attention to the glaring inconsistencies and unfair treatment related to the rights of those with felonies on their record. Like many across the United States, I have witnessed the struggle of individuals who've served their time but continue to face harsh societal penalties. They struggle to find ordinary employment, their right to vote is revoked, and they are fundamentally marginalized — all as a direct result of their felony convictions.

In stark contrast to this reality, we've observed felons in positions of significant influence flaunted these punishments. Specifically, former President Donald Trump, who faced felony charges associated with incidents at the Capitol, was not only allowed to run for presidency but faced very little in the way of personal or professional sanctions. This double standard profoundly undermines the fairness of our society and penal system.

Considering that over 19.8 million people in the US have a felony record, these discrepancies affect a substantial portion of our population (The Sentencing Project, 2020). If these individuals are to successfully reintegrate into society and become productive citizens, they must be given a fair chance. Similarly, fairness should dictate that individuals facing serious criminal charges, regardless of their social or financial stature, should not be permitted to run for an office as impactful as the presidency.

Join us as we petition for comprehensive reforms: the reinstatement of voting and employment rights for rehabilitated felons and stringent regulations on those allowed to hold presidential office, based on their criminal record.
