Reduce congressional pay during government shutdowns

The Issue

Every day, we see the impact of government shutdowns across our nation. Families are struggling to make ends meet, some are skipping meals, and many are only just managing to keep a roof over their heads. It's a struggle that my fellow Americans should not have to endure because of political stalemates.

This is personal to me. With every shutdown, I see my friends, family, and community suffer, while those responsible for the deadlock — our Congress members — continue to receive their full salaries. This isn't right. Article 1 Section 6 of the United States Constitution states that Congress must be compensated for their service, but it does not state that they must receive their full pay during times of governmental non-functionality.

The cognitive dissonance here is palpable. Congress members themselves have been quoted saying, "We know this is going to hurt Americans but it is the only way we can get what we want." This self-serving attitude, putting political games before the people they represent, is unacceptable.

I propose that during government shutdowns, Congress members should be reduced to a ONE DOLLAR ($1) PER DAY SALARY. It may not solve the impasse, but it would show solidarity with the everyday people who are facing real consequences due to these shutdowns. It would motivate them to work towards a solution faster, knowing they also bear the brunt of inaction.

This adjustment is not just symbolic; it’s a necessary step towards accountability. As public servants, their priority should be caring for our fellow Americans first and foremost. If they continue to receive full compensation while our nation suffers, there is little incentive for them to rectify the situation.

Join me in calling for a change. Let us urge our legislators to commit to this measure and ensure that they, like every other government worker, feel the impact of their choices. This isn’t just about fairness; this is about justice and responsibility. Sign this petition to demand change and to stand in unity for a fair governing system that holds our representatives accountable.
