The Issue

Canada's Northern territories, rely heavily on Calm Air's budget flights, which operate in partnership with the Air Canada Aeroplan points program. These flights are not just a convenience; they are a lifeline connecting these isolated regions to the rest of Canada. Unfortunately, recent changes in the number of Aeroplan points required for these flights have significantly increased travel costs, placing a financial burden not only on Nunavummiut  and all residents who depend on these flights for essential travel.  The changes also affects workers, such as nurses, teachers, social workers, trades and construction workers and others, who offer their expertise working in the remote Inuit communities.

Nunavut and other Northern territories are home to vibrant Inuit communities that face unique challenges due to their geographic isolation. Essential services and skilled workers are already in short supply, and affordable air travel is vital for maintaining these communities' connection to the southern parts of Canada. With no other viable transportation options, Calm Air flights supported by Aeroplan points are indispensable.

According to Statistics Canada, 52% of the Inuit in these regions travel by air at some point in an average year. In addition to providing access to critical services and support, these flights allow community members to visit family, pursue educational opportunities, and participate in cultural events that strengthen communal ties. The increased points requirement threatens this accessibility, making it harder for community members to meet their familial and cultural obligations.

To address this pressing issue, we urge Calm Air and the Air Canada Aeroplan program to reassess and reduce the Aeroplan points required for budget travel. By doing so, they will not only ease financial strain but will continue supporting the vital link between the North and the rest of Canada.

Sign this petition to help ensure that affordable flights remain accessible, encouraging the continued flow of skilled professionals and maintaining essential connections for remote Inuit communities.
