Reduce airline pet fees and treat pets as passengers

The Issue

My cat, Zoey, is a big part of our family. She travels with us and loves exploring new places. I believe animals share our emotions and are able to experience what we experience.

On average, the "pet fee" with airlines ranges between $100-$150 ONE way. So I pay between $200-$300 to fly Zoey round trip. Also, she is treated as my "personal item" per the airline's wording. She is to sit in her backpack/carrier beneath the seat in front of me. My main concern is that I typically would have to pay more for her than my own seat, and she doesn't even get a seat.

I know not everyone feels the way I feel, and I'm sure there are some reservations about pets on planes. I can tell you I see both sides. I have been on planes with yapping dogs but more often I am on planes with screaming children. I'm not comparing, just stating the facts. Not all pets are bad and not all children are bad. People traveling with their pets should not be forced to pay more and be provided with less.

Many pet owners regard their pets as cherished family members, and just like any other family member, they too should have the opportunity to travel comfortably and safely.

Airlines can choose to enhance the travel experience for humans and their pets by:

1. Reducing the exorbitant fees required for cabin pet travel. The current fees often discourage pet owners from bringing their animals along, even though many pets are considerably smaller than carry-on luggage.

2. Providing an option for pets to occupy a passenger seat, with secured restraints, which would ensure safety during the flight.

3. Recognizing pets on flights as travel companions rather than personal items, and accordingly classifying them distinctly in terms of baggage rules.

Taking action on these points would not only make air travel fairer for pet owners but also showcase airlines as compassionate and progressive in their approach to customer service.

Join me in urging airlines to reduce pet travel fees and offer a more dignified treatment to our furry friends. Sign this petition to help our beloved companions travel more comfortably on flights, allowing them to encounter the world alongside us, not beneath us.
