Reduce academic subjects and school hours in the Philippines

Reduce academic subjects and school hours in the Philippines
The Issue
I'm a Grade 12 student in the Accountancy, Business, and Management (ABM) track, juggling academics, extracurricular activities, and my personal interests such as running a small business. The demands of school requirements are overwhelming and often feel irrelevant to my future goals. My passion and drive are stifled by the current educational system, which fails to prioritize essential knowledge and skills for in-demand careers.
The Philippine academic curriculum at the elementary and secondary levels is currently overloaded with subjects that are not directly linked to the skills needed for future employment. Many students, like myself, feel burdened by the sheer volume of subjects, leading to stress and lack of engagement. It's essential that we shift the focus of our education system to emphasize core competencies and skills that align with today’s career landscape.
According to the Department of Education in the Philippines, there are eleven subjects mandated for senior high school students. This can amount to as many as 40 hours a week of classroom time. Comparatively, countries like Finland, which is renowned for its successful education system, prioritize fundamental subjects and limit school hours to ensure a balanced approach to learning and well-being.
A streamlined curriculum that highlights necessary skills such as critical thinking, communication, and digital literacy is crucial. These skills are imperative in nearly every modern job sector. Furthermore, a reduction in school hours would allow students to explore personal interests and gain real-world experiences, which can foster creativity and innovation.
By adopting these changes, we not only improve students’ academic experiences but also prepare them more effectively for the future job market. This will result in a generation of Filipinos who are not only knowledgeable but also adaptable and innovative.
I urge the Department of Education in the Philippines to conduct a comprehensive review of the current curriculum and reduce unnecessary subjects while cutting down school hours. Let's create an education system that truly empowers the youth and aligns with the demands of the modern world.
Please sign this petition to support a reform in our education system for a brighter, more relevant future for Philippine students. Each signature brings us closer to a future where education fuels passion and potential, and where learning is a gateway to opportunity, not a burden to bear.
