Redmond local skatepark needs improvement
Redmond local skatepark needs improvement
The Issue
I am a 12-year-old scooter rider who visits the Redmond, Oregon city skatepark daily. While I love scooters, it feels unfair seeing other skateparks like those in Madras and Eugene equipped with lights, providing a safe and inclusive environment for their users regardless of the time of day. Meanwhile, I face challenges at our skatepark from uneven surfaces and cracks that have not been addressed since it was built in 2001. These hazards have caused injuries, making the skating experience less enjoyable and safe for all of us who use the park regularly.
Moreover, due to where wiring would go, these lights could be solar powered, collecting energy in the day for night, especially for clean energy. These lights would turn on at 7:45-9:45 PM in the summer and 6:30-8:30 PM for winter, the city seems to be investing significantly in modernizing the dry canyon area to attract more visitors and residents. With such development ongoing, I believe the addition of lights at our skatepark, along with repairs to the cracked surfaces, could foster a safer community space that could be a fantastic investment in our city's recreation infrastructure. Improvements such as adding new bowls in the dirt pit with trees and rocks, or a 'street ride' section where there is grass and dirt, especially since scooter riding is an ever-evolving sport, this would modernize the skatepark and attract more enthusiasts, encouraging outdoor activities among young people in our community.
Skateparks should be safe, accessible, and enjoyable for all, just like those in neighboring areas. By signing this petition, you are supporting the call for Redmond's city officials to prioritize upgrading our beloved skatepark. Let's work together to ensure that the Redmond city skatepark can be a safe, modern, and inclusive hangout for everyone who loves skateboarding and scooters. Please sign this petition to show your support and to urge local government to take immediate action.
